Pallet Kings
Timber is of course, the traditional material used for the manufacture of pallets. Typically, pallets are constructed from either Softwood (normally pine) or Hardwood.
Pallets range quite significantly
in size and style. The
Australian Standard pallet is 1165mmx1165mm, the US and European Standard is
1200x1000mm (some parts of Europe have 1200x800mm as the standard, often
called the Euro) and Japan and Korea have the 1100x1100mm Standard.
Generally, timber pallets come in two styles, bearer construction and block construction.
The Australian Standard Pallet is normally of bearer construction, also known as a 2-way pallet (forklift access from front and back of the pallet only) and the dimensions are 1165x1165mm. The height of the pallet varies from 125mm to 150mm and depends on the depth of the deckboards and stringers (bearers).

Block construction pallets are also known as 4-way pallets (forklift access from all four sides of the pallet). As the name implies, the block pallet has wooden blocks between the upper and lower deckboards as opposed to solid bearers (stringers).

The benefits of timber are predominantly cost, ease of manufacture and abundance of supply. Softwood Timber pallets are generally cheaper and easier to source than other materials whilst Hardwood is desired for its strength and durability.

Plastic pallets allow the export of goods without the
need for fumigation, or concern that they may be quarantined in the
destination country awaiting fumigation. Plastic pallets have many other
great characteristics
Due to ISPM-15 regulations, import and export of goods on timber pallets has
become more difficult and even outlawed in some countries. This is due to
concerns that the timber pallets may be carrying bacteria or other life
forms that might cause damage to the ecosystem in the destination country.
Using kiln dried wooden pallets and fumigation at either end is still
acceptable in some countries, though it adds expense and complexity to using
wooden pallets for overseas cargo transport.
Plastic pallets are ideal for export because of their strength, light weight, durability and resistance to bacteria, pests and vermin means that there’s no need for time-consuming fumigation or heat treatments.

Nestable Plastic Pallet Nestable are generally lighter in weight but also less sturdy. When not in use, they take up very little room as they nest together in a neat stack. |

Stackable Plastic Pallet Stackable pallets are for more heavy duty use and are more like a traditional wooden pallet. |
Plastic pallets are often made partially, or completely from recycled plastic material. If the pallets are damaged, or have no further use they may be recycled into other plastic products.
